Mach 1 is returning, but as a Mustang-inspired EV

Ford Motor Co. says its upcoming long-range battery-electric crossover -- tentatively called Mach 1 -- is inspired by the Mustang.

It's also inspired by the Ford GT.

The group in charge of making the electric vehicle, dubbed Team Edison, was formed last year and has been modeled after the small, close-knit bunch that created the latest Ford GT supercar in a secret basement room in a far corner of the company's product development center.

Details about the Mach 1, due in 2020, have been scarce (Ford still won't even confirm the name), but Hau Thai-Tang, head of product development and purchasing, has offered some insight into its development.

Team Edison was recently in China to study EV buyers there and discovered that they like larger display screens than what was originally planned for the Mach 1. Some wanted to suggest changing the size of the display, but others hesitated because the traditional Ford product development process says it's too late for a change that substantial.

"Everybody felt they were doing the right thing," Thai-Tang said. "One team was trying to react to customer trends; the other was trying to protect engineering discipline."

That's when he reminded them to think of the GT team.

"The Ford GT had a very singular mission: Go back to Le Mans and beat Ferrari," he said. "If we have a singular mission now, it's to launch this car in 2020 and for it to be our best BEV vehicle. If the GT team found out Ferrari had some competitive advantage that would give them the edge at Le Mans, how would we react? We'd do anything possible to figure out how to replicate it and beat them. Why are we not taking the same approach?"

They did, and decided to make the late change.

Thai-Tang wouldn't reveal what size the display will be and was mum on any other details about the car.

But when you finally get behind the wheel and glance at the display, you can thank the GT -- and Ferrari -- if the size feels just right.

Ford's Mustang-inspired electric SUV won't use Mach 1 name

Ford's performance-oriented electric SUV due in 2020 won't be called a Mach 1.

Ford teased the possibility of using the name of the cherished Mustang trim for the SUV back in January, but a strong negative response from fans has persuaded the automaker to seek another name.

"We put that out there to evaluate it," Jim Farley, Ford's president of global markets, told Automotive News (subscription required) in an interview published Monday after being quizzed about the name. "There are pros and cons. I don't want to handicap it at this point, but we got a very strong reaction from people."

While it won't borrow the name of the Mustang trim, the vehicle is still expected to borrow Mustang styling cues. Chevrolet did something similar with its 2019 Blazer, which borrows cues from the Camaro.

All Ford will say about the SUV is that it will offer 300 miles of range and be sold globally. The platform will likely be the new modular electric platform Ford confirmed this month. The platform is one of a total five modular platforms that Ford will use going forward.

Production of the SUV was originally slated for Ford’s Flat Rock plant in Michigan but is now expected to take place at a plant in Mexico.

The vehicle is part of Ford's plan to launch 16 electric cars by the end of 2022, some of which are being developed exclusively for the Chinese market. Ford has a dedicated team of engineers working on electric cars. Called Team Edison, the team has greater autonomy than you'd normally find at the automaker in order to accelerate the development process. In addition to electric cars, Ford will also add plug-in hybrid powertrains to core models like the F-150, Escape, Explorer and Mustang in the coming years as part of its electrification plans.

Feast your eyes on the first spy shots of Ford's performance-oriented electric SUV.

This is the 300-mile small electric SUV promised for 2020. Ford in early 2017 teased the possibility of using the Mach 1 name for the vehicle but only this week we learned that a strong negative response from Mustang fans has persuaded the automaker to seek another name.

Crucially, the design of the headlights, the steeply raked windshield, and the proportions of the nose seems to confirm the rumors the SUV will at least feature Mustang-inspired styling. The result should be something akin to Chevrolet's 2019 Blazer, which borrows cues from the Camaro.

The styling should ensure the vehicle stands out in the small electric SUV segment, which will soon include entries such as the Audi e-tron, BMW iX3, Jaguar I-Pace, Mercedes-Benz EQC and, if not delayed, the Tesla Model Y. It should also distance the vehicle from the similar sized Ford Escape, which is about to undergo a redesign.

The engineers have attempted to fool onlookers by placing exhaust tips on the prototype as well as a sticker that reads “Diesel Fuel Only.” The protective plating underneath, commonly used to protect floor-mounted batteries on electric prototypes, gives away the identity of the powertrain, however.

The 225/60R18 tires fitted to the prototype, in this case Michelin all-season rubber, also hint at an electric powertrain, as a relatively skinny tread helps to reduce drag and is a popular option for electric cars.

Ford släpper första bilden på Mustanginspirerade elbilen

Ford har idag släppt den första bilden på sin helt nya elbil som lanseras 2020. Den Mustanginspirerade bilen har utvecklats av Team Edison, en grupp inom Ford som specialiserar sig på design och utveckling av elfordon för den globala marknaden.

Ford Team Edison är en utvecklingsgrupp inom Ford med ett tydligt uppdrag att på helt nya och innovativa sätt utveckla elektriska fordon för en marknad i hög accelerationstakt.

Gruppen har i uppgift att tillsammans och på ett snabbt sätt komma fram till lösningar på gemensamma och unika utmaningar som varje marknad har. För att lösa uppgiften har Team Edison därför anammat en ”no stripes mentality”, för att uppmuntra till idéskapande från flera olika synvinklar.

Darren Palmer är global produktutvecklingschef för gruppen som sitter i helt nya kontor i Detroit i USA.

– Kunder som använder elektriska fordon köper sig in i framtiden. Vårt team är därför till 100 procent dedikerat till att inte bara leverera fordon kunderna kommer älska, utan också ett felfritt och komplett elektriskt ekosystem, säger Darren Palmer.

Fords helt nya Mustanginspirerade och helelektriska fordon, med en målräckvidd på över 480 km, lanseras på marknaden 2020. Ford investerar nästan 100 miljarder kronor i sin elfordonsportfölj och ska fram till och med 2022 leverera 16 helt elektriska fordonsmodeller och ha totalt 40 elfordon i modellprogrammet.

Ford irked the Mustang community early this year when it announced that the cherished Mach 1 name would be used on an electric crossover SUV with styling inspired by its iconic pony car.

Due to the strong negative response to the use of the name on something other than a Mustang, Ford in August said the SUV would go by a different name when it arrives for 2020.

We now have the potential reveal of the new name Ford has chosen: Mach E.

First discovered by The Drive, Ford on November 26 filed trademark protection for “Mach E” and “Mach-E” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The filings specifically pertain to use on "motor vehicles, namely, electric vehicles, passenger automobiles, trucks, sport utility vehicles, off-road vehicles, and structural parts, fittings, and badges therefor; metal license plate frames."

A source with information on Ford's future plans who is not allowed to publicly discuss future products said the Mach E name has been discussed among executives.

Motor Authority reached out to Ford for comment on the trademark filings. A spokesperson simply said, “Trademark applications are intended to protect new ideas but aren’t necessarily an indication of new business or product plans.”

Early testers for the SUV have been spotted in the wild and Ford in September released a shadowy teaser that showed clear influences from the Mustang in the final design. All Ford will say about the vehicle is that it will have 300 miles of range.

We'll add that there's another vehicle Ford has in the pipeline that could be the recipient of the name. Recall, the automaker is working on a Mustang hybrid for 2020 and Mustang Mach E certainly has a nice ring to it.
